A wonderful South African concept that basically means: It takes a village to raise a child

And it takes my whole family to make me who I have become today.

And I could not have been more happy - and proud - to have all my UK family come join me at the public opening of the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award today @nationalportraitgallery . No heatwave nor health issues could keep them away. I am so amazingly lucky to call these humans my family.

Thank you for coming all the way across the country and the city to join me @pickledmimi @thatwineblokeuk @jojoaverytv @maia.avery

Even though I moved the other side of the world more than half a life time ago, and I love my adopted country so deeply and am so flippin’ proud to represent 🇿🇦 , these humans will always be my first ‘fam’ ❤️

The Portrait Awards opened to the public today and the show runs until 7 October.

  • About last night…

…Just a nippy little glimpse of some of last night’s Private Viewing of the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award at the @nationalportraitgallery

Join me at “Ros’s Place” 😉

This is still feeling rather surreal for me.

I know my mum hates these high-paced reels (sorry mum!) but time is precious, people are bizeeee! …and I know those of you who want more detail are either following on my stories and/ or on my subscribers list anyways 😉

Also, last night was a bit of a blur TBH. Hence the choice of a reel so you get the feel!! (I think the professional photographers have a lot better shots than I do. “Any more Jane’s?” is the funny line at the end of the reel 😂)

Plus I’m relishing the moment. Trying to keep off my phone, but not ignoring you. I’ll post more in the coming days but for now, I must get myself ready for the Press Morning.

And maybe I just might choose not to cycle this time.

Or pay a bit extra for an e-bike.

It is gonna be stinking hot day again here in London.

This girl is on 🔥

  • 🇿🇦WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS YOUTH DAY? 🇿🇦

On this day 50 years ago, school children and students protested against Bantu Education. Many lost their lives by standing up for the right to learn.

Sadly, there are still many barriers to education in this country. Across South Africa, girls are still missing school. Not because they don’t want to be there. But because of their period and a lack of access to menstrual products.

That’s why this Youth day, from today until the end of the month I’m hosting both a fundraiser (see previous post) and a raffle.

If you only have a little time and can afford a little donation, this raffle is for you!

For just R100 you can buy a ticket that not only gives you the chance to win the artist’s proof of my best-selling A3 print “Child’s Play” but you also buy a pack of 4 reusable period pads for a girl who otherwise can’t afford it. These little packs can last for years and are very easy to use and to clean. You’ll be helping a girl child manage her period with dignity and eliminate the fear of leaking, and shame attached in many cultures, from stopping her get to school.

DONATE R100 via link to @ladytalkmatters in my bio
Then send me a DM to let me know how many tickets you have bought ❤️

Together, we can make a difference.
  • 🇿🇦✊ YOUTH DAY ART FUNDRAISER ✊🇿🇦

June 16th is more than a public holiday.
It is a day etched in history.

On the same day 50 years ago, in 1976, thousands of young people in Soweto, a township here in South Africa, took to the streets to protest against an education system designed to oppress them.

They were brave. They were bold. They knew their rights — and they fought for them. Youth Day exists to honour that courage, and to remind us that young people have always had the power to change the world. 💛

That spirit lives on today - because the fight for equal access to education is not over.

Across South Africa, girls are still missing school. Not because they don’t want to be there. But because of their period.🩸

Fear of leaking. No sanitation facilities. No products. Silence. Shame. Period poverty is real, it is widespread, and it is quietly stealing girls’ confidence, dignity, and futures.

Menstrual health is not a luxury. It is a human right.

For almost a decade, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with schools and NGOs, working with children, youth, parents, and communities to break the stigma, educate young people about their bodies, including trying to ensure that no girl is held back because of her period. 💜

This Youth Day - in fact for the rest of the month of June - you too can be part of the change. I’m partnering again with @ladytalkmatters to help fund packs of reusable pads which not only help a girl navigate her periods with ease and dignity but also to fund workshops to educate both boys and girls on their bodies during adolescence.

🎨 Join me at my Youth Day Art Fundraiser - where creativity meets courage, and every purchase helps keep a girl in school and children learn more about their growing bodies.

Because when we honour the brave young people of 1976, we honour every young person still fighting to be seen, heard, and educated today.

  • My newsletter just dropped today!

And it’s a good’un.

(Sure hope you took the time to sign up like I suggested).

• Two weeks today is the Public Opening of the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Awards.

• In 10 days I fly to London for the Awards event on the 23rd.

• In five days we celebrate Youth Day, and I have a really fun and meaningful way you can help me honour those who fought so hard for their right to education 50 years ago.

• June is packed. Join me for the ride.

You know what to do. Add your deets to get onto my… (It rhymes with “sailing p*ssed”… which is never a good idea 😂)

Or pop me a comment and I’ll send you the link to past issues. So you can do your homework before you dive in. 🙂

I really don’t like to bang on about it but this platform really isn’t the best for staying in the loop with everything that’s going on in my studio (which is a LOT this month). And definitely not if you want to:

• be the first to see my original works online
• get the chance to be the first to buy my original work
• enjoy exclusive entries to my very occasional competitions
• get access to all the behind the scene content
• follow my journey to London in two weeks time, and get first access to the Awards ceremony at the National Portrait Gallery
• find out how my work got picked (and about the piece I submitted) for the Awards

Swipe to find the call to action (as if you need a clue😏).
And check my story for that shortcut 🔗

It’s June already? Where did the first half of the year go?

I’ve been working hard at getting my work out there and under your noses. But, just like life itself, the shows don’t go on forever.

🤓 In the second slide, I’ve written up the dates that all my current exhibitions are CLOSING. You’re welcome.

NB: Two of the shows close tomorrow!

Including the incredibly popular @salon104.art “Le Papier” show that’s happening right now, in the heart of Cape Town.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to get your hands on original art, all in the same format (unframed, on A4 paper) for the ridiculously affordable price of R1,800 (that’s £85 for my UK fans). Best bit? For every sale, we get to donate R300 to a local art charity @imbali_wc

I’ll be on shift this afternoon 3.30 - 7.30pm and tomorrow (our last day!) from 9.30 - 1.30pm. Pop me a DM if you are coming!

I’m sharing some of my brand new work in this carousel but be warned: as originals, once they are gone they are GONE!
It’s a first come, first served event.

If you can’t get to see it in person, but want to have the opportunity to get your mitts on some of my more affordable works, you know what to do: get “grind” up to my “sailing mist” IYKYK 😉

🇿🇦✊ YOUTH DAY ART FUNDRAISER ✊🇿🇦

My newsletter just dropped today!

1. “Girl reading a letter” (available via @gallery_glencarlou )
2. “Man reading a paper” (private commission)

L A S T C H A N C E !

If you can’t get to see it in person, but want to have the opportunity to get your mitts on some of my more affordable works, you know what to do: get “grind” up to my “sailing mist” IYKYK 😉
L A S T C H A N C E !
